Applied Science Advancement Program
Geering Up has re-vamped our Junior High and High School program! Join future leaders and change-makers from across Canada and around the world as you study cutting-edge technologies and concepts in today’s Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Class discussions and lectures will be guided by top professors and graduate students at UBC. Our goal is to empower High School students to solve tomorrow’s problems and give them a venue to connect with like-minded peers.
Get a Competitive Edge
At UBC Applied Science and Engineering, we believe practical knowledge is not enough to manifest change. Success stems from the ability to apply knowledge innovatively to solve current problems and further the limits of our capabilities. We are proud to be hosted at a campus environment that constantly exemplifies these characteristics. From the creation of a new method to treat femur fractures to the design of a self-repairing road UBC students and faculty solve world problems on a daily bases.
Likewise, ASAP participants will have the opportunity to apply their current and new knowledge in these types of applicable and forward-thinking contexts. Through a week-long project students will work in teams to apply STEM principles, business ideas and entrepreneurial skills to create a product or service that responds to a real world problem. UBC professors and students will mentor students to help maximize the project’s success and impact. We believe this project will help build our participant’s resume, as well as their leadership, collaborative and entrepreneurial skills; life-skills that are crucial for succeeding in University and beyond.
Meet the UBC Community
Our team of instructors is made of university students from the faculties of Engineering and Science. Each instructor is passionate about their field of study and has extensive experience working with youth. We also work closely with professors and graduate students to teach lessons and facilitate laboratory experiences for ASAP participants.
Explore Your Interests
There are four different streams students can choose from. Each stream will run twice throughout the summer.
- Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering: This stream applies engineering and technology to biological systems.
- Mechatronics: Students will learn how to integrate mechanical, electrical and computer engineering to design new technologies.
- Discover: This is a broader stream where students can explore a number of topics in biology, chemistry and physics.
- Civil Engineering and Environmental Urban Design: This stream will focus on how to design, construct and implement sustainable structures that respond to a need within the community.
