Geering Up camps are all about making Science, Technology and Engineering hands on and exciting. Each day is a dynamic mix of hands on activities, demonstrations, tours, mentors, and design challenges.

2017 Camp Descriptions

Our team of Instructors plan the curriculum at the end of June to ensure that the activities done at camp are different each year. We do not send out exact schedules, as our camps are fluid and our instructors tailor each week to the campers. The table below should give you a good idea of the activities we do in each camp!

We bring in mentors or go on a field trip at least once during each camp, and our camps include a wide range of science and engineering topics. We avoid repeat activities that have occurred in the recent past to avoid kids experiencing the same camp year to year – so every summer, get ready for a brand new week of science and engineering!

STEAM

Grade 2-3, 4-5, 6-7 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)! This is a creative design camp. Join us at the crossroads of Art and Science, for a hands-on week of creativity and learning. This camp endeavors to show kids how principles of design and science are interwoven. Visit our STEAM page for more details.

High School

Grade 8-12

We have re-vamped our High School programming this year at camp! Participants will learn about cutting edge technologies and topics from leading UBC professors and grad students. They will have both lessons and hands-on experience in laboratory settings. Participants will work on a project throughout the week that applies what they have learned to solve a problem within the community. Not only is this great for a resume, but will teach leadership, collaborative and entrepreneurial skills that are crucial for succeeding in University and beyond. High school students have the opportunity of becoming fully immersed in the University environment by staying in UBC residence throughout the week with our overnight camp option!

Please note, that final details are still being worked out. We will send another email once registration opens for High School camps!

Maker Camp

Grade 4-6 Geering Up’s “Maker”-style camps are back with a focus on design and technology. Potential activities include coding with Scratch, Lego Mindstorms design challenges, working with Arduinos, designing rockets, building concrete structures, and more!

Codemakers

Grade 2-9 CodeMakers is back bringing computer science to the next generation of BC youth! This camp will range from grades 2-9, depending on the week (check out the schedule!). Potential activities include working with Arduinos and Arduino-C, binary puzzles, cyphers and encryption, digital graphics, visual coding in Scratch, looking at data in Python, and more!

Girls Only Camps

Grades 2-12 Join us for more science and engineering in a Girls Only environment! Girls Only Camps will run from grade 2 to grade 12, depending on the week. Visit our Girls Only camp page for more details!

*The grade level for each camp is the grade the camper is entering in September.

Codemakers

Geering Up is proud to be participating in Codemakers, a national program powered by Actua and Google. Actua’s network members at post-secondary institutions across Canada will empower 100,000 youth with critical computer science skills and prepare them for their future roles as innovators in technology.
